gasps & fissures
Cadence
Kyle Bruckmann makes use of standard
instruments but then alters them electronically
on gasps and fissures(482 Music 1027,
51:09). In this case he plays oboe or English horn
(on the last track he is joined by Kurt Johnson on
bass), but with overdubbing and electronic alteration
he creates something new. As he describes it
himself in the liner notes, “Sounds generated by the
direct application of wind, water and flesh to wood
and metal are grotesquely magnified and manipulated
in time and space to sculpt music of claustrophobic
intimacy and impossible physicality.” What
this amounts to are attractive reedy wails and overdubbed
organ chords playing fragments of melody
over the amplified sounds of keys clacking and
breath shushing, until it is almost like an environmental
recording of nature sounds.
