Third (or is it fourth?) generation post-AACM free improvisors have a lot of options; these guys prefer not to be nailed down to a single style. With Rempis's interval-probing, sporadically squalling tenor sax invoking first-generation icon Fred Anderson, the bubbling rhythm section (bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Tim Daisy) stretch out on hot vamps that gradually seek melodic resolution while exploring various rhythmic and textural guises. But they can also abstract their intensity into drip-and-splatter fragments, and when dithyrambic pianist Jim Baker switches to startling but subtle analogue synth and Rempis cools down on alto sax, the music takes on an airy design and fresh sound.
